With a bit of straightforward looking-after, your 100% Hungarian goose down duvet should easily last 10 years or more — plenty go longer when treated right.
Air it regularly New duvet? Give it a full 24 hours in a breezy, dry spot (outdoors if the weather’s kind, or near an open window) before first use — this lets the down loft up properly and reach its full cosy potential. Shake it out every few weeks to redistribute the down, fluff it back up, and keep air circulating inside. Regular airing keeps it fresh, odour-free, and performing at its best without needing frequent washing.
Washing Down duvets don’t need washing often — aim for every 12 – 24 months if it starts looking less fluffy or has picked up odours (using a duvet cover, as most people do, helps hugely here). It’s machine-washable: use a gentle/delicate cycle at 30°C to 40°C maximum with a mild, non-bio detergent (only about a third of the usual amount — too much suds can be hard to rinse out). Skip fabric softeners entirely; they coat the down and kill the loft. A large front-loading machine is ideal to give it room to move without clumping.
Drying Line dry first if possible (in shade, not direct sun — high heat can damage the down’s elasticity). Then finish in a tumble dryer on low heat (30°C or gentle setting). Pop in 2–3 clean tennis balls or wool dryer balls to bash out any clumps and restore the bounce. Keep going until it’s completely bone dry — even a hint of dampness can make the down clump and lose its insulating power. Patience here pays off big time.
